Description
Aldara cream contains imiquimod, an immune response modifier. Rather than acting on the wart directly, it prompts a local immune response in the treated skin. It is licensed for external genital and perianal warts in adults, and also for certain skin conditions including superficial basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis, which are treated under specialist direction using different regimens.
For genital warts it is applied thinly at bedtime three times a week, on non-consecutive days, and washed off with mild soap and water after the number of hours stated in the leaflet. Each sachet is for a single use and is discarded afterwards. Redness, flaking, itching, burning and breaks in the skin at the treated area are common; a break in treatment can be taken if the reaction is severe.
Imiquimod weakens latex condoms and diaphragms. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a condition affecting your immune system.
