Description
Cerazette is a progestogen-only pill containing desogestrel 75 micrograms. It contains no oestrogen, so it can be used by many people who cannot take a combined pill, including those who smoke over the age of 35, those with migraine with aura, and those who are breastfeeding. It is licensed to prevent pregnancy and, unlike older progestogen-only pills, it works mainly by preventing ovulation.
One tablet is taken every day at about the same time, with no break between strips. If a tablet is more than 12 hours late, extra precautions are needed for the next seven days. Irregular bleeding is common, particularly in the first months; periods may become lighter, less frequent, or stop altogether. Tell your prescriber if you have had breast cancer, liver disease or unexplained vaginal bleeding, and if you take medicines for epilepsy, tuberculosis or HIV. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
