Description
Dermovate Ointment contains clobetasol propionate 0.05%, a very potent topical corticosteroid. It is used for short courses in stubborn inflammatory skin conditions that have not responded to weaker steroids, including recalcitrant eczema and dermatitis, psoriasis other than widespread plaque psoriasis, lichen planus and discoid lupus erythematosus.
The greasy ointment base holds moisture in the skin, so it is usually chosen for dry, scaly or thickened areas. Apply a thin film once or twice a day and expect the treated skin to be reviewed within a few weeks. Because the steroid is very potent, there is a limit on how much can be used each week, and long use can thin the skin, cause stretch marks or be absorbed enough to affect the adrenal glands, especially on the face, in skin folds or under dressings. It is not for untreated skin infection, acne, rosacea or perioral dermatitis.
