Description
Desloratadine is a non-sedating antihistamine and the active metabolite of loratadine. It blocks the H1 receptor and is licensed for the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, itchy watery eyes and an itchy palate, and for the itching and weals of urticaria. The usual adult dose is one 5mg tablet once a day, with or without food, taken at about the same time each day.
It can be used during a pollen season or continuously for year-round allergy. Drowsiness is uncommon but not impossible, so see how it affects you before driving or using tools, and avoid alcohol until you know how you respond. Tell your prescriber if you have kidney or liver problems, if there is a history of seizures, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
