Description
Diflucan contains fluconazole, a triazole antifungal. The 150mg capsule is a single dose treatment for vaginal thrush and, in men, for candidal balanitis. It is swallowed whole with water, with or without food, and it works throughout the body rather than only where a cream is applied, so no pessary or internal treatment is needed.
An external cream is sometimes used alongside for itching and soreness of the surrounding skin. Symptoms usually begin to settle within a few days; if they have not improved after about a week, they should be reassessed. Fluconazole is not suitable in pregnancy, and advice is needed if you are breastfeeding. It interacts with a number of medicines, including warfarin, some statins, certain antihistamines and some medicines that affect heart rhythm.
Tell your prescriber if you have liver or kidney problems or a heart rhythm disorder.
