Description
Dulcolax tablets contain bisacodyl 5mg, a stimulant laxative. Bisacodyl acts on the wall of the large bowel to increase the muscular movement that pushes stool along, and it is used for the short-term relief of constipation. The tablets are gastro-resistant, so they are swallowed whole with water and not chewed or crushed, and not taken within an hour of milk or an indigestion remedy, which would release the medicine too early and can cause stomach cramps.
A dose taken at bedtime usually works the following morning, generally within six to twelve hours. Stimulant laxatives suit short courses; taking them every day over long periods is not recommended, and more fibre, more fluid and more activity come first where that is possible. Do not use them if you have a blocked bowel, undiagnosed abdominal pain or severe dehydration.
See a doctor if constipation is new, if it persists, or if there is bleeding or weight loss.
