Description
Eucreas contains two medicines for type 2 diabetes in one tablet: vildagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor, and metformin, a biguanide. Vildagliptin increases the gut hormones that prompt insulin release after a meal, while metformin reduces the glucose the liver makes and helps the body respond to its own insulin. It is prescribed where a single medicine has not given enough control, or in place of taking the two separately.
One tablet is usually taken twice a day with food, which lessens the stomach upset metformin can cause. Because metformin is cleared by the kidneys, your kidney function is checked before treatment and at intervals afterwards, and treatment is paused around scans using iodinated contrast dye and around surgery. Rarely, metformin is linked with lactic acidosis.
Vildagliptin needs liver function monitoring. Tell your prescriber about kidney, liver or heart problems, and about how much alcohol you drink.
