Description
Femodette is a combined oral contraceptive containing gestodene 75 micrograms and ethinylestradiol 20 micrograms. The oestrogen dose is at the lower end of the range used in combined pills, which can mean more spotting or breakthrough bleeding in the first few months. It is licensed to prevent pregnancy and works mainly by preventing ovulation.
One tablet is taken at about the same time each day for 21 days, followed by a seven day break in which a withdrawal bleed usually happens; the next strip starts on day eight. Vomiting or severe diarrhoea can stop a tablet being absorbed, and extra precautions are then needed. Combined pills increase the risk of venous and arterial blood clots.
Femodette is not suitable if you have migraine with aura, a history of clot, or certain heart, liver and circulatory conditions. Tell your prescriber if you smoke and are over 35. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
