Description

Gliclazide MR is a modified release sulfonylurea, used with diet and exercise to lower blood glucose in type 2 diabetes. It prompts the pancreas to release more insulin, and the tablet is made to release the medicine slowly across the day, so it is normally taken once daily with breakfast. Swallow it whole with water; do not crush or chew it, as this would release the dose all at once.

Modified release gliclazide is not interchangeable milligram for milligram with standard gliclazide tablets, so do not switch between them without advice. Because it increases insulin, it can cause hypoglycaemia, and the risk rises with missed meals, alcohol and unaccustomed exercise; keep fast-acting sugar with you and learn the warning signs.

Tell your prescriber about kidney or liver problems, G6PD deficiency, or plans for pregnancy. Sulfonylureas carry DVLA requirements for drivers.
