Description
Imodium Original contains loperamide hydrochloride 2mg, an antimotility medicine. Loperamide slows the movement of the bowel so that more water is absorbed from the gut, which makes stools firmer and less frequent. Small packs are licensed for the short term relief of acute diarrhoea. The usual adult approach is two capsules to begin with, then one after each loose stool, without exceeding the maximum stated on the pack, and for no longer than 48 hours without advice.
Drinking plenty of fluid matters more than stopping the diarrhoea itself, because the main risk from a short episode is dehydration. Do not use it if there is blood or mucus in the stool, or a high fever. Speak to a pharmacist if the diarrhoea has followed a course of antibiotics, if you are pregnant, or if symptoms last beyond 48 hours.
