Description
Komboglyze contains saxagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor, together with metformin, a biguanide, in one tablet for type 2 diabetes. Saxagliptin works with the gut hormones that prompt insulin release when blood glucose rises after eating, and metformin reduces the amount of glucose the liver releases while helping the body use its own insulin.
It is prescribed where diet, exercise and a single medicine have not given enough control. One tablet is usually taken twice a day with food; taking it with a meal reduces the nausea and loose stools metformin can cause, which often settle over the first weeks. Kidney function is checked before treatment and regularly during it, and the medicine is paused around scans using iodinated contrast dye and around surgery.
Tell your prescriber if you have kidney, liver, heart or pancreatic problems, or if you drink alcohol heavily.
