Description
Levonorgestrel 1.5mg is emergency contraception. It is a progestogen and works mainly by delaying the release of an egg, so it is taken as a single tablet within seventy-two hours of unprotected sex or a contraceptive failure. It becomes less effective the longer it is left, and it does not work once ovulation has already happened.
It does not end an established pregnancy and is not a regular method of contraception. If you vomit within three hours of the dose, another tablet is needed. A higher dose, or a different emergency method, may be advised at a higher body weight or body mass index. Medicines that induce liver enzymes reduce its effect, so tell the prescriber about all your medicines, including anything bought without a prescription.
Your next period may come earlier or later than usual; take a pregnancy test if it is more than five days late.
