Description
Locoid Lipocream contains hydrocortisone butyrate 0.1%. Despite the hydrocortisone name this is a potent topical corticosteroid, not the mild hydrocortisone sold over the counter. It is used for inflammatory skin conditions that respond to steroids, such as eczema and dermatitis. The base holds a high proportion of oil in water, so it sits between a cream and an ointment: more moisturising than a cream on dry skin, but easier to spread and less greasy than an ointment.
Apply a thin film to the affected skin, usually once or twice a day, and reduce the frequency as the flare settles. Use it sparingly on the face and in skin folds, and avoid the eyes. Long or repeated courses of a potent steroid can thin the skin and, over large areas, enough may be absorbed to affect the adrenal glands. Tell your prescriber if the skin becomes infected.
