Description
Locoid Ointment contains hydrocortisone butyrate 0.1%. Despite the hydrocortisone name this is a potent topical corticosteroid, not the mild hydrocortisone sold over the counter. It is used for inflammatory skin conditions that respond to steroids, such as eczema and dermatitis. The greasy ointment base holds moisture in the skin, so it is generally chosen for dry, scaly or cracked areas rather than moist or weeping ones.
Apply a thin film to the affected skin, usually once or twice a day, reducing the frequency as the flare settles, and continue emollients between flares. Use it sparingly on the face and in skin folds, and keep it away from the eyes. Long or repeated courses of a potent steroid can thin the skin, and treating large areas can allow enough to be absorbed to affect the adrenal glands. Tell your prescriber if the skin becomes infected.
