Description
Metronidazole is an antibacterial from the nitroimidazole group. It acts against anaerobic bacteria and some protozoa, and is a standard treatment for bacterial vaginosis, a change in the balance of bacteria in the vagina that often causes a thin grey discharge with a fishy smell. The 400mg tablets are swallowed whole with water, with or just after food, for the number of days your prescriber specifies, and the course is finished even if the discharge settles sooner.
Do not drink alcohol while taking metronidazole or for two days after the last tablet, as the combination can cause flushing, a fast heartbeat, nausea and vomiting. A metallic taste, furred tongue and nausea are common. Tell your prescriber if you take warfarin or lithium, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a liver or nerve condition.
