Description

Pravastatin is a statin, supplied as pravastatin sodium tablets. It lowers cholesterol by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol, which increases the clearance of LDL cholesterol from the blood. It is licensed for raised cholesterol and mixed dyslipidaemia, and to reduce cardiovascular risk in people who have had a heart attack or unstable angina or who are otherwise at increased risk.

One tablet is taken once a day in the evening, with or without food, alongside a diet lower in saturated fat. Pravastatin is handled by the liver differently from some other statins and is less affected by grapefruit juice, though it still interacts with medicines including ciclosporin. Tell your prescriber promptly about unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness. It must not be taken in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
