Description
Zidoval is a vaginal gel containing metronidazole 0.75%, an antibacterial used to treat bacterial vaginosis. Applied inside the vagina, it acts on the anaerobic bacteria that have overgrown, and much less of the medicine reaches the rest of the body than with tablets. One applicatorful is inserted at night for the number of nights your prescriber specifies, using the applicators supplied.
It is used at bedtime because lying down helps keep the gel in place, and some gel appearing the following morning is expected. The gel can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms, so these should not be relied on during treatment and for a short time afterwards. Avoid alcohol during the course and for two days after it, and avoid sexual intercourse while treating.
Tell your prescriber about pelvic pain, fever, or a discharge that has not settled by the end of the course.
