Description

Alfuzosin hydrochloride is an alpha blocker. It relaxes the muscle in the neck of the bladder and in the prostate, which lets urine flow more freely and eases the symptoms of an enlarged prostate: a weak or interrupted stream, hesitancy, straining, dribbling, and needing to pass urine often or urgently, including at night.

It relieves symptoms and does not shrink the prostate. The 2.5mg tablets are taken several times a day as directed, and the first dose is usually taken at bedtime, because alpha blockers can cause dizziness or faintness when you stand up, particularly in the first days of treatment. Get up slowly from sitting or lying, and sit or lie down again if you feel light-headed.

Tell your eye surgeon that you take alfuzosin before any cataract surgery, because it can affect the pupil during the operation. Tell your prescriber about liver or kidney problems and any blood pressure medicines.
