Description
Betamethasone valerate 0.1% cream is a potent topical corticosteroid. It reduces the redness, swelling and itch of inflammatory skin conditions, and is used for conditions including eczema and dermatitis, psoriasis other than widespread plaque psoriasis, lichen planus and discoid lupus erythematosus. The cream base is lighter than an ointment, so it is generally chosen for moist or weeping skin and for areas where a greasy base is not wanted.
Apply a thin film once or twice a day, then use it less often as the skin settles. Prolonged use of a potent steroid can thin the skin, cause stretch marks and be absorbed into the body, particularly on the face, in skin folds, under dressings and in young children, so courses are kept short and reviewed. It is not for untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin infection, acne, rosacea or perioral dermatitis.
