Description
Cilest is a combined oral contraceptive containing norgestimate 250 micrograms and ethinylestradiol 35 micrograms. It is licensed to prevent pregnancy and works mainly by preventing ovulation, with additional effects on cervical mucus and the lining of the womb. One tablet is taken at about the same time each day for 21 days, followed by a seven day break during which a withdrawal bleed usually happens.
Combined pills raise the risk of blood clots in the veins and arteries, and that risk is highest in the first year of use, after a break of a month or more, and with smoking, obesity or increasing age. Cilest is not suitable if you have migraine with aura, a history of clot, or certain heart, liver and circulatory conditions.
Tell your prescriber about all other medicines, since some reduce contraceptive effect. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
