Description
Colofac IBS tablets contain mebeverine hydrochloride 135mg, an antispasmodic. Mebeverine relaxes the muscle in the wall of the bowel, which eases the cramping pain, spasm and bloating of irritable bowel syndrome. It acts directly on the gut rather than on the whole body, so it does not cause the dry mouth and blurred vision associated with older antispasmodics.
The usual adult dose is one tablet three times a day, taken about 20 minutes before meals. The pharmacy pack is intended for people whose irritable bowel syndrome has already been diagnosed by a doctor. Mebeverine eases symptoms rather than treating the underlying condition, and diet, fibre and stress management remain important.
Speak to the pharmacist before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and see a doctor if the symptoms are new, if you are over 40 with a change in bowel habit, or if there is bleeding, unexplained weight loss or a fever.
