Description
ellaOne contains ulipristal acetate 30mg and is used as emergency contraception. It works mainly by delaying the release of an egg, so it is taken as a single tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sex or a contraceptive failure, and within one hundred and twenty hours. It does not end an established pregnancy, and it is not intended as a regular method of contraception.
If you are sick within three hours of taking it, another tablet is needed. A progestogen taken close to it can make ulipristal less effective, so hormonal contraception is normally started or restarted several days afterwards, with condoms used in the meantime. Medicines that induce liver enzymes, including some anti-epileptics, rifampicin and St John’s wort, reduce its effect.
Tell the prescriber if you have severe asthma treated with steroid tablets, liver problems, or if you are breastfeeding.
