Description
Ezetrol contains ezetimibe 10mg. It is not a statin. It works in the lining of the small intestine, where it reduces the absorption of cholesterol from food and from bile, which lowers the amount of cholesterol reaching the liver. It is licensed for primary hypercholesterolaemia, usually added to a statin when a statin alone has not brought cholesterol low enough, and it can be used on its own when a statin is not suitable or not tolerated.
One tablet is taken once a day, at any time, with or without food, alongside a diet lower in saturated fat. If you also take a bile acid binding medicine such as colestyramine, the doses need to be separated. Tell your prescriber about unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, and about any liver problems. It is not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
