Description
Femodene is a combined oral contraceptive containing gestodene 75 micrograms, a progestogen, and ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms, an oestrogen. It is licensed to prevent pregnancy. It works mainly by stopping ovulation, and it also thickens cervical mucus and thins the lining of the womb. One tablet is taken at about the same time each day for 21 days, then no tablets for seven days, during which a withdrawal bleed usually occurs; the next strip begins on the eighth day whether or not bleeding has stopped.
All combined pills raise the risk of blood clots in the veins and arteries, and the size of the venous risk varies with the progestogen used, as well as with age, body weight and smoking. Femodene is not suitable if you have migraine with aura, a history of blood clots, or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Tell your prescriber about every other medicine you take. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
