Description
Fluvastatin is a statin, supplied here as fluvastatin sodium capsules in 20mg and 40mg strengths. Statins lower cholesterol by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol, which increases the clearance of LDL cholesterol from the blood. Fluvastatin is licensed for raised cholesterol and mixed dyslipidaemia and, after a coronary procedure, to reduce the risk of further cardiac events.
The capsules are usually taken in the evening or at bedtime, swallowed whole with water, and they can be taken with or without food. Treatment goes alongside a diet lower in saturated fat rather than replacing it. Blood tests for cholesterol and liver function are usually taken before starting and repeated during treatment.
Tell your prescriber promptly about unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness. Fluvastatin must not be taken in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
