Description
Lescol contains fluvastatin, a statin. Statins lower cholesterol by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol, which in turn increases the clearance of LDL cholesterol from the blood. Fluvastatin is licensed for raised cholesterol and mixed dyslipidaemia in adults, and for reducing the risk of further cardiac events after a coronary procedure.
The 80mg strength is a prolonged release tablet, taken once daily and swallowed whole rather than broken or chewed; it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. It is taken alongside a diet lower in saturated fat. Tell your prescriber promptly about unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, and tell them if you have liver or kidney problems or drink heavily.
Statins must not be taken in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and reliable contraception is needed if there is any chance of pregnancy.
