Description
Logynon is a combined oral contraceptive taken in three phases. Its 21 active tablets contain levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol in three different strengths, so the tablets must be taken in the order marked on the strip. It is licensed to prevent pregnancy and works mainly by preventing ovulation, with additional effects on cervical mucus and the lining of the womb.
One tablet is taken at about the same time each day for 21 days, followed by a seven day break in which a withdrawal bleed usually happens. Because the doses change through the cycle, missed pill advice depends on which phase you are in, so check the leaflet. Combined pills raise the risk of blood clots in the veins and arteries.
Logynon is not suitable if you have migraine with aura, a history of clot, or certain heart and circulatory conditions. Tell your prescriber if you smoke and are over 35. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
