Description
Lucette is a combined oral contraceptive containing drospirenone 3mg, a progestogen, and ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms, an oestrogen. It is licensed to prevent pregnancy and works mainly by preventing ovulation. One tablet is taken at about the same time each day for 21 days, followed by a seven day break in which a withdrawal bleed usually occurs.
Drospirenone has a mild effect on salt and water balance and can raise blood potassium, so tell your prescriber if you have kidney or adrenal problems, or if you take an ACE inhibitor, an angiotensin receptor blocker, a potassium sparing diuretic or regular anti-inflammatory painkillers. Combined pills increase the risk of venous and arterial blood clots, and Lucette is not suitable if you have migraine with aura, a history of clot, or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
Seek urgent advice for calf swelling, chest pain or sudden breathlessness. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
