Description
Malarone tablets contain atovaquone 250mg with proguanil hydrochloride 100mg, an antimalarial combination. It is licensed to prevent falciparum malaria in travellers and to treat acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria. For prevention, an adult takes one tablet daily at about the same time each day, starting one or two days before arriving in the malaria area, continuing throughout the stay, and continuing for seven days after leaving.
Tablets are taken with food or a milky drink to help absorption, and a dose is repeated if you vomit within an hour of taking it. Antimalarial tablets reduce the risk of malaria but do not remove it, so bite avoidance remains essential: repellent, covered arms and legs after dusk, and an insecticide-treated net. Tell your prescriber if you have kidney problems, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you take warfarin, rifampicin, rifabutin, metoclopramide or tetracycline. Seek medical advice urgently about any fever during or after the trip.
