Description
Marvelon is a combined oral contraceptive containing desogestrel 150 micrograms and ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms. It is licensed to prevent pregnancy. It works mainly by stopping ovulation, and it also thickens cervical mucus and thins the lining of the womb. One tablet is taken at about the same time each day for 21 days, then a seven day break follows and a withdrawal bleed usually happens during it; the next strip starts on day eight.
Vomiting shortly after a tablet, or severe diarrhoea, can mean the tablet has not been absorbed. Combined pills raise the risk of venous and arterial blood clots, and the venous risk with desogestrel containing pills sits at the higher end of the range for this class. Marvelon is not suitable with migraine with aura, a history of clot, or certain heart and circulatory conditions. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
