Description
Metrogel contains metronidazole in a gel applied to the skin. It is licensed for the treatment of the inflammatory papules, pustules and redness of rosacea. Used on the skin, metronidazole works mainly by damping down inflammation rather than by treating an infection. A thin layer is applied to the affected areas of the face on clean, dry skin, avoiding the eyes and the inside of the nose and mouth; a moisturiser or make-up can go on once the gel has dried.
Rosacea responds slowly, so a course usually runs for several months before the effect is judged, and treatment is then reviewed. Dryness, redness, stinging, burning and itching of the skin can occur. Strong sunlight and sunbeds can aggravate rosacea, so use sun protection. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy.
