Description

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It blocks leukotrienes, substances released in the airways during an allergic response that cause swelling and narrowing. The 10mg tablet is used in adults and older adolescents as an add-on treatment for asthma that is not well controlled by an inhaled corticosteroid alone, and for asthma symptoms brought on by exercise.

It also relieves seasonal allergic rhinitis in people who have asthma. Being a tablet rather than an inhaler, it is swallowed once a day in the evening, with or without food, and it is taken alongside your inhalers rather than instead of them. It is a preventer, not a reliever, so do not use it to treat an attack. Speak to your prescriber if you notice changes in mood, sleep, dreams, behaviour, agitation or thoughts of self-harm, as neuropsychiatric reactions have been reported with montelukast.
