Description
Movicol sachets contain macrogol 3350 together with sodium and potassium salts, an osmotic laxative. The macrogol holds water in the bowel, which softens the stool and increases its volume so that it passes more easily, and the added salts help keep the body’s own salts and water in balance. Movicol is used for chronic constipation and, at higher doses over a few days, to clear faecal impaction.
Each sachet is dissolved in water and drunk, following the leaflet or your prescriber’s instructions; for impaction several sachets are taken over the course of a day. Once dissolved, the solution can be kept covered in a fridge and used within the period stated in the leaflet. Osmotic laxatives can be used for longer periods than stimulant laxatives where that is needed.
Do not use it if you have a blocked or perforated bowel or severe inflammatory bowel disease. Tell your prescriber about heart or kidney problems.
