Description
NuvaRing is a flexible ring, placed in the vagina, that releases etonogestrel and ethinylestradiol. It is a combined hormonal contraceptive: the hormones pass through the vaginal wall and work mainly by preventing the release of an egg. You insert one ring yourself, leave it in place for three weeks, then remove it for a ring-free week, during which a bleed usually happens, and insert a new ring on the same day of the week.
Exactly where the ring sits inside the vagina does not affect how well it works. Combined hormonal contraception raises the risk of a blood clot in a vein, and is not suitable if you have migraine with aura, certain clotting conditions, or if you smoke and are over thirty-five. It gives no protection against sexually transmitted infections. Mention the ring before any surgery or a long period of immobility.
