Description
Senna 7.5mg tablets contain sennosides, a stimulant laxative derived from the senna plant. The sennosides are broken down by bacteria in the large bowel and then stimulate the bowel wall to contract more strongly, moving stool along, so they are used for the short-term relief of constipation. Tablets are usually taken at bedtime with water, and a bowel movement generally follows about eight to twelve hours later.
Stimulant laxatives suit short courses rather than continuous use; where possible, more fibre, more fluid and more activity come first, and a bulk-forming or osmotic laxative may be more suitable for longer-term constipation. Do not take senna if you have a blocked bowel, undiagnosed abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease or severe dehydration.
Urine may take on a harmless yellow-brown or reddish colour. See a doctor if the constipation is new, if it does not settle, or if it comes with bleeding, vomiting or weight loss.
