Description
Solifenacin succinate is an antimuscarinic medicine. It reduces unwanted contractions of the bladder muscle and is licensed for the symptoms of overactive bladder: urgency, passing urine more often than usual, and urge incontinence. The tablet is swallowed whole with water once a day, with or without food. Treatment usually starts at 5mg and may be increased to 10mg if needed.
Bladder training and advice on fluid and caffeine intake are part of managing the condition alongside the medicine. Dry mouth is the most common side effect; constipation, blurred vision, dry eyes, indigestion and urinary tract infection can also occur. It is not suitable if you have urinary retention, uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, severe ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon.
Tell your prescriber if you have kidney or liver problems, a heart rhythm disorder, or take other medicines with antimuscarinic effects.
