Description
Spiriva Respimat contains tiotropium, a long-acting muscarinic antagonist. It blocks the nerve signals that tighten the muscle around the airways, keeping them more open through the day, and it is used as regular maintenance treatment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and as an add-on in some people with asthma.
It is not a reliever and does not treat a sudden attack; keep a short-acting reliever inhaler for that. The Respimat device gives a slow, fine mist over about a second, so you can breathe in steadily and deeply. It is used once a day at about the same time. Take care not to let the mist reach your eyes, which can cause blurred vision, eye pain or seeing haloes around lights.
Tell your prescriber if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, difficulty passing urine, kidney problems or a recent heart problem.
