Description
Sukkarto SR contains metformin hydrochloride in a prolonged release tablet, used with diet and exercise to lower blood glucose in type 2 diabetes. Metformin is a biguanide. It reduces the glucose the liver releases, slows how much glucose is absorbed from food, and helps the body respond better to its own insulin. It does not make the pancreas produce more insulin, so on its own it rarely causes hypoglycaemia.
The prolonged release tablet is usually taken once a day with the evening meal and is swallowed whole; do not crush or chew it. The empty tablet shell may be seen in your stools, which is expected. Nausea, wind and loose stools are common early on and often settle. Kidney function is checked before treatment and regularly during it, and the medicine is paused around contrast scans, around surgery, and during illness with vomiting, diarrhoea or fever.
