Description
Tetralysal contains lymecycline, a tetracycline antibiotic taken by mouth. It is licensed for acne vulgaris, where it reduces the bacteria involved in inflamed spots and calms the inflammation around them. The usual course is one capsule daily, and treatment is normally continued for at least eight weeks before the response is judged; a prescriber then reviews whether it should carry on.
Swallow the capsule with a full glass of water while sitting or standing upright. Avoid taking it at the same time as antacids, indigestion remedies, or iron, zinc or calcium supplements, because these reduce how much is absorbed. Tetracyclines can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so take care in strong sun and avoid sunlamps.
Tetralysal is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children under 12, because tetracyclines can affect developing teeth and bones. Tell your prescriber if you have kidney or liver problems, myasthenia gravis or lupus, or if you take warfarin or an oral retinoid.
