Description
Vimovo combines naproxen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, with esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, in one modified-release tablet. It is licensed for the symptomatic relief of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis in people who are at risk of developing NSAID-associated stomach and duodenal ulcers.
The naproxen reduces pain, stiffness and inflammation; the esomeprazole reduces stomach acid to lower the ulcer risk. Tablets are swallowed whole with water, before food, and are not split, chewed or crushed. Anti-inflammatory medicines can still irritate the stomach and can cause ulceration or bleeding, and longer use at higher doses carries a small increased risk of heart attack and stroke, so the lowest effective dose is used for the shortest time.
Tell your prescriber if you have heart, kidney or liver problems, high blood pressure or asthma, and if you take warfarin, clopidogrel, methotrexate or an SSRI antidepressant.
