Description
Nipple shields are thin silicone covers worn over the nipple during a breastfeed. They sit between the nipple and the baby’s mouth, so feeding can continue while sore, cracked or flat nipples settle, and they are sometimes used where a baby is having difficulty latching. The shield is put on before the feed, removed and washed afterwards, and sterilised between uses in the same way as other feeding equipment.
Shields are usually supplied in a case for carrying and storing. They are intended as a short term measure rather than a permanent way of feeding, because prolonged use can affect milk transfer and supply. A midwife, health visitor or infant feeding specialist should advise on whether a shield is appropriate and on the right size.
