Description
Vokanamet contains canagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, with metformin, a biguanide, in one tablet for type 2 diabetes. Canagliflozin makes the kidneys remove more glucose in the urine, while metformin lowers the glucose the liver produces and helps the body use its own insulin. One tablet is usually taken twice a day with food.
Because more sugar passes into the urine, genital thrush and urinary infections happen more often; washing and drying the genital area and drinking enough fluid both help. Dehydration and light-headedness on standing can occur, particularly in hot weather, during illness or alongside a diuretic. SGLT2 inhibitors can cause diabetic ketoacidosis even when blood glucose readings look normal, so seek urgent advice for vomiting, stomach pain, deep breathing or a sweet smell on the breath. Look after your feet and report any new sore, ulcer or infection.
