Description
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic. It is used for chlamydia when doxycycline is not suitable, for example in pregnancy or where a tetracycline cannot be taken. The course is short and the tablets are taken over a small number of days rather than as a single dose in current guidance; take them exactly as directed and finish the course.
Tablets can be taken with or without food. Nausea, stomach discomfort and diarrhoea are the most common side effects. Azithromycin can affect the heart’s rhythm, so tell your prescriber if you have a heart rhythm problem or take medicines that also affect it, and tell them about antacids, warfarin, ciclosporin or ergot medicines.
Avoid sex, including with a condom, until the course is finished and any partner has been treated. Recent sexual partners should be tested and treated.
