Description
Bendroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic. It acts on the kidneys to help the body remove salt and water, which lowers blood pressure, and it is used in high blood pressure and in fluid retention. The tablet is taken once daily in the morning, so that any extra visits to the toilet happen during the day rather than at night.
It can lower the level of potassium and sodium in your blood and raise the level of uric acid, which can bring on gout, so your prescriber will arrange blood tests. It can also affect blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Tell your prescriber if you have kidney or liver problems, diabetes, gout or lupus, and if you take lithium, digoxin or another medicine that affects blood salts.
The skin can become more sensitive to sunlight. This medicine is generally avoided in pregnancy.
