Elocon Ointment

Description

Elocon Ointment contains mometasone furoate 0.1%, a potent topical corticosteroid. It reduces the inflammation, redness and itching of steroid-responsive skin conditions, and is used for eczema and dermatitis and for psoriasis other than widespread plaque psoriasis. It is applied thinly once a day. The greasy ointment base holds moisture in the skin, so it is usually chosen for dry, scaly or thickened areas, while the cream suits skin that is moist or less thickened.

Courses are kept short and the skin reviewed, because prolonged use of a potent steroid can thin the skin, cause stretch marks and, over large areas or under dressings, be absorbed enough to affect the adrenal glands. Do not use it on untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin infections, acne, rosacea or perioral dermatitis, and keep it away from the eyes. Tell your prescriber if the skin becomes infected or does not improve.
