Description
Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It blocks the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, the hormone that shrinks hair follicles in male pattern hair loss, and the 1mg tablet is licensed to treat that condition in men. One tablet is taken each day, with or without food. Any change is gradual, and several months of continuous use are usually needed before the effect can be judged; if treatment stops, hair lost to the condition returns over the following months.
Sexual side effects including reduced desire, difficulty getting an erection and problems with ejaculation are recognised, and have been reported to continue in a small number of men after stopping. Changes in mood, including depression and suicidal thoughts, have also been reported. Finasteride lowers PSA blood test results, so mention it if a prostate test is arranged. It is not for women or children.
