Description
Jardiance is the brand name for empagliflozin, a sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor, usually shortened to SGLT2 inhibitor. It lowers blood glucose by causing the kidneys to remove glucose in the urine rather than reabsorbing it, and it is used in the management of type 2 diabetes alongside diet and exercise, either on its own or with other diabetes medicines.
The tablets are taken once a day, with or without food, at about the same time each day. Passing more urine, thirst, genital thrush and urinary tract infections are recognised effects of this class. Diabetic ketoacidosis can occur with an SGLT2 inhibitor even when blood glucose is normal or only slightly raised, so seek urgent medical advice for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual tiredness or breathlessness.
Tell your prescriber about kidney problems, about any illness that stops you eating and drinking normally, and if you take insulin, a sulfonylurea or a diuretic.
