Description

Loratadine is a non-sedating antihistamine. It blocks the H1 receptor and reduces the effect of histamine released during an allergic reaction. It is used for the symptoms of hay fever and other allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, a runny or itchy nose and itchy watery eyes, and for the itching and weals of urticaria.

The usual adult dose is one 10mg tablet once a day, with or without food. It can be taken only on the days you need it, or every day through the pollen season. Loratadine causes drowsiness less often than older antihistamines, but a few people are affected, so see how you respond before driving. Speak to the pharmacist if you have severe liver problems, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if symptoms do not settle after several days of regular use.
