Description
Premarin tablets contain conjugated oestrogens and are an oestrogen-only hormone replacement therapy, used for symptoms that follow the menopause. One tablet is taken each day at about the same time, with no break between packs, and the strength is chosen and reviewed according to how symptoms respond. Oestrogen taken on its own thickens the lining of the womb, so if you still have a womb a progestogen is prescribed alongside it; women who have had a hysterectomy usually take oestrogen alone.
HRT carries small increases in the risk of breast cancer, blood clots in the legs and lungs, and stroke, and the size of the risk depends on your age, your own history and how long you take it. It is not a contraceptive. Tell your prescriber about any unexplained vaginal bleeding, and keep up your breast screening appointments.
