Description
Rigevidon is a combined oral contraceptive containing the progestogen levonorgestrel 150 micrograms and the oestrogen ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms. It is licensed to prevent pregnancy. It works mainly by stopping the ovaries releasing an egg, and it also thickens cervical mucus and thins the lining of the womb. One tablet is taken at about the same time each day for 21 days, followed by a seven day break during which a withdrawal bleed usually happens; the next strip starts on the eighth day, whether or not bleeding has finished.
Combined pills raise the risk of blood clots in the veins and arteries, and that risk is higher in the first year of use, after a break, with smoking, with obesity and with increasing age. Rigevidon is not suitable if you have migraine with aura or a history of clot. Tell your prescriber about all other medicines. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
